Why travel with a local operator

We are based in Turkmenabat, not in another country selling Turkmenistan from a distance. That means the guide meeting you at the airport or at the Farap border works for us, the yurt camp at Darvaza is booked directly, and if a road is closed or a flight shifts, the itinerary is rearranged the same day rather than through a chain of intermediaries.

Ashgabat and Old Nisa
A capital built almost entirely in white marble, with the Neutrality Monument, the Alem centre and the Sunday bazaar — and, half an hour away, the earthen walls of Old Nisa, a Parthian royal fortress on the UNESCO list.
Darvaza Gas Crater
The «Door to Hell» — a burning gas field in the middle of the Karakum Desert. We stay overnight in a yurt camp beside it, so you see the crater after dark and again at dawn, when it looks like a different place entirely.
Ancient Merv
One of the largest archaeological sites in Central Asia and a UNESCO World Heritage site — a city that was, for a time, among the biggest in the world before the Mongol armies reached it in 1221.
Yangykala Canyon
Layered pink, red and white cliffs above what was once the floor of an ancient sea, in the far west of the country. Remote, hard to reach without a driver, and the single most photographed landscape in Turkmenistan after Darvaza.
Kow Ata underground lake
A warm sulphur lake inside a cave in the Kopetdag foothills, about 35 °C year-round. A short, easy stop that most travellers add on the way west from Ashgabat.
Kunya-Urgench and Nokhur
The minarets and mausoleums of the old Khorezm capital in the north, and the mountain village of Nokhur with its unusual cemetery and traditions found nowhere else in the country.

Common questions
Is Turkmenistan safe for tourists?
Yes. Violent crime against visitors is very rare and travellers are generally treated with courtesy and curiosity. The practical risks are heat, long driving distances and limited medical facilities outside Ashgabat, which is exactly what a planned itinerary and a local driver are for.
Can I travel independently, without a tour?

How far in advance should I book?
