Frequently asked questions about Turkmenistan tours
Short answers about visas, how long to stay, where a trip can start, prices and the best season to travel.
Do I need a visa to travel to Turkmenistan?
Almost every foreign visitor needs a tourist visa, and a tourist visa is issued on the basis of a Letter of Invitation (LOI) arranged by a licensed local operator. We prepare the LOI request for your confirmed programme and tell you exactly which documents your nationality requires.
How many days should I plan for Turkmenistan?
Three to five days are enough for Ashgabat, Old Nisa and the Darvaza gas crater. If you want to add Ancient Merv, Yangykala Canyon or Koytendag, plan six to ten days so the driving distances stay comfortable.
Where can the tour start and finish?
Most travellers start at Ashgabat airport. If you are travelling the Silk Road through Uzbekistan, we can meet you at a land border instead — Shavat–Dashoguz coming from Khiva, or Farap coming from Bukhara — and finish at whichever border suits your onward route.
Can I change a ready-made itinerary?
Yes. Every published programme is a starting point. We can change the number of days, the order of the route, the type of accommodation and the pace, or build a completely new itinerary around what you want to see.
How much does a tour cost?
The final per-person quote depends on the route and duration, travel dates, group size, accommodation category, private or group format, and the services included. We confirm the exact price and inclusions in writing before booking.
Can we stay overnight at the Darvaza gas crater?
Yes, and it is the way we recommend seeing it. Guests stay in a yurt camp near the crater, which means you see the burning gas field after dark and again at sunrise, when it looks completely different.
When is the best time to visit Turkmenistan?
Spring, from April to May, and autumn, from September to October, are the most comfortable seasons. Summer in the Karakum Desert regularly passes 40 °C, and winter nights in the desert are cold, so both are possible but need a carefully paced programme.
What is normally included in the price?
Transport with a driver, an English-speaking guide, accommodation, meals as listed in the programme, entrance fees to the sites on your route, and assistance at the border or airport on arrival. International flights and the visa fee itself are paid separately.
