Motorcycle Travel in Turkmenistan
Turkmenistan is not a country you ride into on short notice. Entry is document-led: every traveller needs an approved Letter of Invitation before a visa is issued, and that applies whether you arrive by air, by vehicle or on your own bike. Once that part is settled, the riding itself is unusually open — long straight desert highways, very light traffic outside the cities, and distances that reward an early start.

Karakum Desert & Darvaza
The Darvaza gas crater sits in the middle of the Karakum, off the main north–south road. The final approach is soft sand, which is the single most common problem for loaded touring bikes. Depending on the group and the machines involved, that last section is sometimes ridden and sometimes done by 4×4 — we will tell you honestly which we expect for your group rather than promising either.
Route Planning & Logistics
Routes are planned around riding days rather than sightseeing days: realistic distances, fuel stops, where the group sleeps, and how the border days fall. Common anchors are Ashgabat and Old Nisa, Merv, Kunya-Urgench, the Yangykala canyons and Kow-Ata underground lake.
Visa & LOI Support
This is the part that decides whether a motorcycle trip through Turkmenistan happens at all. We prepare and submit the Letter of Invitation documentation and track its status. Full requirements and current timings are on the Turkmenistan visa and LOI page. Start early: LOI processing is measured in weeks, not days, and approval is issued by the authorities, not by us.
Border & Arrival Coordination
We coordinate arrival arrangements and the paperwork side of the border day, including entry points used by riders coming from Uzbekistan. Vehicle import formalities for your own motorcycle are handled at the border by the customs authorities; what is required can change, so we confirm the current position for your specific crossing and dates rather than publishing a fixed answer here.
Guide & Ground Support
Licensed local guides accompany groups in Turkmenistan — this is a requirement for most tourist itineraries here, not an upsell. Additional ground support such as a following vehicle can be discussed and is available depending on the confirmed route and group requirements.

How far in advance should I start?

Ask us. Whether machines can be arranged depends on the confirmed route and group requirements, and we would rather tell you what is actually possible for your dates than list something generic here.
Is the Darvaza crater reachable on a loaded touring bike?
The last section is soft sand. Some groups ride it, some transfer by 4×4. We will tell you which we expect for your group and machines.
