The Indian calendar is largely lunar and moves every year. For a long-haul trip the dates that matter are Diwali in November, Holi in March and Republic Day in January — leave is built around them.

October 2026

The birthday of Mahatma Gandhi, one of India’s three nationwide holidays. A Friday in 2026.
November 2026
- 6–10 NovemberDiwali●
The festival of lights and the biggest event of the Indian year: Diwali itself is 8 November 2026, but the days off and the travelling stretch across several days. Tickets sell out months ahead.
December 2026
- 25 DecemberChristmas
A nationwide public holiday.
January 2027
- 26 JanuaryRepublic Day●
The anniversary of the constitution coming into force in 1950. A Tuesday — many take the Monday and get four days.
March 2027
- 10 MarchEid al-Fitr
The festival marking the end of Ramadan. In India the date is confirmed by moon sighting and may shift by a day.
- 21–22 MarchHoli●
Holika Dahan on 21 March, the festival of colours itself on the 22nd. One of the few Indian holidays worth planning a trip around well in advance.
May 2027
- 17 MayEid al-Adha
The Feast of the Sacrifice; the date is confirmed by moon sighting.
August 2027
- 15 AugustIndependence Day
The anniversary of independence in 1947; a Sunday in 2027.
