Russian time off comes in large blocks: eleven days at New Year, three in February, three in March and the drawn-out May period. These are the windows most of our Russian bookings arrive in, and the first ones where the yurt camp at Darvaza sells out.
The calendar: September 2026 – August 2027
November 2026
- 4 NovemberUnity Day
A public holiday marking the liberation of Moscow in 1612. A single midweek day off — enough for a short 3–4 day trip.
December 2026
- 31 December – 10 JanuaryNew Year holidays●
Russia’s longest break: 31 December is a transferred day off, 1–8 January are public holidays, 9–10 January fall on the weekend. Eleven days in a row — the best window of the year for a long trip.
January 2027
- 7 JanuaryOrthodox Christmas
Orthodox Christmas by the Julian calendar, falling in the middle of the New Year break.
February 2027
- 21–23 FebruaryDefender of the Fatherland Day●
The 23 February holiday plus a day transferred from Saturday 20 February to Monday 22nd gives a three-day weekend, 21–23 February.
March 2027
- 6–8 MarchInternational Women’s Day●
8 March falls on a Monday, producing a three-day weekend running from Saturday.
May 2027
- 1–3 MaySpring and Labour Day●
May Day falls on a Saturday, so the day off moves to Monday 3 May — three days in a row. Together with 9 May it forms the traditional Russian May travel season.
- 2 MayOrthodox Easter
Orthodox Easter 2027. Not a statutory day off, but many Russians take leave across the May period.
- 8–10 MayVictory Day●
9 May falls on a Sunday with Monday the 10th carried over. A three-day weekend and the second most popular travel window after New Year.
June 2027
- 12–14 JuneRussia Day●
The holiday falls on a Saturday and the day off moves to Monday 14 June — a three-day weekend at the start of summer.
